Mary Koms Biopic To Encourage Women

New Delhi: Though hesitant to speak about her biopic, woman boxer Mary Kom is hoping that the film does not create instability in her home state of Manipur.

M C Mary Kom, a five time women’s boxing champion and Olympic bronze medalist, also wishes that the ban on Hindi cinema imposed by insurgent outfits, is lifted from her state. Theatres in Manipur have not screened any Hindi film since the year 2000, following the imposition of a ban by the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF).

Now, the government and the people of Manipur have to decide about the release of the film, said Mary Kom, who was busy practicing at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

“I want that there should be peace, unity, and love. All these are very important not only for me but for each and everyone,” she said

The film, starring Priyanka Chopra, traces Mary’s life from her humble roots to her achieving several world titles, including a bronze medal at 2012 London Olympics.

Produced by well know Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film is directed by Omung Kumar.

Mary Kom feels the film could be an inspiration for many boys and girls in her native place who inspire to attain success like her. “I hope more people will get inspired by the movie. Earlier many people, mostly youngsters and women got inspired by me (after winning Olympic medal). Now, I want more people will get inspired after watching the movie. That will be my success,” she said.

Mary Kom believes the film will inspire the women in the country after knowing her story through her biopic film. “They (women) don’t want to come up after the marriage and after having children. It was very difficult and a big challenge for me too. I want to show them that even with these difficulties we can do it. If you have passion, belief and will power, then we can succeed,” the mother of three children added.

Mary, who failed to qualify for Glasgow Commonwealth Games, is practicing hard to qualify for Asian Games in South Korea and 2016 Rio Olympics.

“My preparation is going very well now, much better, in comparison to last three months. I am going to be fit. I am ready for this Asian Games trial and the Asian Games,” said Mary Kom.

She also gave her best wishes to the sportspersons competing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. “I give my best wishes to the men and women representing India at the Commonwealth Games. I pray and I believe that they will come back with medals,” she concluded.

The movie is set to hit the screens on September 5, 2014.
