No breakthrough with Sharif not stepping down

Date:

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has reportedly directed all his party leaders and ministers not to issue any hostile statements and let the ball of negotiation rolling. The government is still hoping for a dialogue to resolve the ongoing political deadlock with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).

According to a report in The Nation, sources claim that Nawaz Sharif has spoken with members of the team who held meetings with PAT and PTI negotiations teams on Wednesday night.

Punjab Governor Ch Muhammad Sarwar, who is part of the four-member negotiation team which held talks with PTI, briefed Prime Minister Sharif and told him about the demands put forth by PTI leadership which is foremost the resignation of the PM.

The political elite are standing with Sharif in the crisis, and no breakthrough can be seen in the near future, as the unanimous decision of the ruling party is that they would “not accept any unconstitutional demand of the protesters”.

JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman has advised PM not to accept any of the unconstitutional demand of both these parties. He has urged him to force the protestors to drop the demand of resignation but show leniency on rest of their demands regarding electoral reforms and revamping of Election Commission of Pakistan.

Pakistan People’s Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has also returned to the country on the request of Sharif. He has summoned a party meeting in Bilawal House Karachi to discuss the latest situation and devise party’s role in the political imbroglio.

In a meeting in Dubai held a few hours before Zardari departed for Karachi, he said the party will stand behind democracy in the prevailing crisis but there was no overt support extended to the incumbent political dispensation, a source in the government said.

Sources in the ruling PML-N informed that the party leadership had decided to mobilise their supporters and activists in all the big cities by holding public rallies and demonstrations in support of democracy.
