Rajnath in J&K as flood havoc claims over 100 lives

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh have arrived in J & K on Saturday to review the flood situation.

Over 100 people lost their lives as floods continued to wreak havoc in the state. The Army has joined the relief operations as the situation turned grim.

All the trains heading to Katra in Jammu have been suspended due to landslides along the railway tracks in Udhampur region.

Almost all 10 districts in Jammu region have been affected. River Jhelum and many other streams have been swollen and have inundated most areas in five districts of Kashmir. Three more districts out of 10 in the Valley have also been affected by the flood fury.

Twenty people died in Rajouri in flash floods, landslides and house collapses on Friday, SSP Rajouri Mubasir Latifee said, adding that 13 of them perished in house collapse triggered by a landslide in Thanamandi belt.

Besides, 25 bodies have been recovered from Thursday’s bus mishap in which 63 members of a marriage party were washed away in Rajouri district, the SSP said.

As many as 6,000 people were rescued from flash floods in various areas by teams of Army and IAF. Over 3,000 people from 20 villages have been evacuated from Pargwal and Munawar Tawi belt in view of areas getting inundated by swollen Chenab river in Jammu and one thousand from other districts thereby dislocating and displacing 10,000 people.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticised Home Minister Rajnath Singh for taking up the matter of Kashmiri Pandits’ rehabilitation at a time when the state was dealing with such a crisis. Singh had written to the Chief Minister, asking him to find land for the displaced Kashmiris.
