Warner Bros to make Minecraft movie

Date:

Move over, Lego Movie! Warner Bros. has purchased the rights to produce aMinecraft movie.

The game’s creator, Markus Persson, confirmed rumours of a movie when he tweeted, “Someone is trying to leak the fact that we’re working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft movie. I wanted to be the leak”.

Deadline Hollywood, a film blog, is the “someone” that Persson was referring to. The blog also wrote that Roy Lee, the producer of the Lego Movie, will oversee the Minecraftmovie, which is true. Persson’s design studio Mojang will also have input on the movie’s creative direction.

But a plot for the Minecraft movie could be difficult for Warner Bros. The game doesn’t have much of a narrative and players mostly do what they want. The game didn’t even get an official ending until 2011, two years after it first came out.

So far there is no word on cast, plot, title, or script – just like the Lego Movie Sequel – but we do know that fans really want a Minecraft movie. Early in February Persson had to shut down a fan-made Minecraft movie online fundraising campaign that was looking to raise $600,000.

Minecraft hasn’t only made its way into the hearts of gamers–it can also be found in classrooms.Teachers use it to teach children about urban planning and mechanics.
