He is also known for shunning award ceremonies and not accepting any Indian awards. He even turned down Madame Tussaud’s offer to immortalize him in a wax statue!

This Padma Bhushan recipient is the national brand ambassador of UNICEF to promote child nutrition.

Childhood

Aamir Khan was born as Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan on March 14, 1965 in Mumbai. His father was a film producer and several of his relatives were part of the Hindi film industry. He had a “tough childhood due to the financial problems faced by his father whose film productions failed to earn profits.

Khan appeared on screen as a child artist in the 1970’s hit Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). He loves tennis and was a state tennis champion for Maharashtra during his school days.

Actor

Aamir Khan began his career in Bollywood with movie ‘Holi’ (1984).  Four years later, Khan debuted as leading actor with “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”. The movie was a runaway success catapulting Khan to stardom.

After that he appeared in a number of movies but most of them were unsuccessful at box office. However, he got success with the film “Dil”. Thereafter “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander” and ‘Rangeela” followed and both the films did well at the box office.

In 2007, he turned director with the film Taare Zameen Par which not only brought him immense critical acclaim but was a huge box office success. The next year, his first all out commercial action film Ghajini went on to become the highest grossing film of its time in Indian Cinema.

His movies Three Idiots (2009), Dhoom 3 (2013) are considered as cult classics.

Presenter

Khan made his television debut with his social issue based talk show Satyamev Jayte in 2012. The show received phenomenal public response and Khan was applauded for his efforts to change the nation by critics.

Humanitarian

In 2006, Aamir participated in the demonstrations put up by the Narmada Bachao Andolan committee. He also lent his support to the Janlokpal Bill Movement led by Anna Hazare in August 2011.

In 2012, Khan met the prime minister and the minister for social justice and empowerment and discussed the plight of manual scavengers and sought eradication of manual scavenging in the country.

Personal Life

When he was 21, Khan proposed Reena Dutta who agreed.  But apparently, there was opposition since she was from a Hindu family and him, from a devout Islamic one. So, they eloped, got married and returned to their homes.  They have two children.

In 2002, Khan filed for divorce, ending the 15-year marriage. Reena took custody of both children. Three years later, Khan married Kiran Rao. They announced the birth of their son, Azad Rao Khan, through a surrogate mother.
