Delhi polls: Cong releases first list of candidates

New Delhi: The Congress party on Thursday released its first list candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls.

Prominent among the 24 names released are that of former Delhi minister Haroon Yusuf , who shall be contesting from Ballimaran; Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chief Arvinder Singh Lovely, who will contest from Gandhi Nagar; and Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed , who will stand from Seelampur.

A K Walia will contest from Laxmi Nagar, while the Congress candidates from the Matiya Mahal and Uttam Nagar constituencies are Shoaib Iqbal and Mukesh Sharma respectively.

Earlier, the Union Cabinet had given its approval for the dissolution of the Delhi State Assembly after holding a meeting to discuss Lieutenant-Governor (LG) Najeeb Jung’s recommendation.

Jung had sent a status report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) over government formation in the capital after consultations with the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congressand Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at Raj Niwas to explore the possibility of government formation in Delhi. The LG had met all the three party leaders separately.

In the meeting, all the parties had expressed their inability to form the government in Delhi.

Delhi has been under President’s rule since February 2014 after the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government stepped down after 49 days in office
