American Sniper: Much of a traditional American war classic, this film is about the life of Chris Kyle, the most feared American sniper in Iraq. The film has been directed by Clint Eastwood, and Bradley Cooper’s brilliant portrayal of a role many thought he wouldn’t be able to execute is one of the best reasons to watch this film. The action sequences are very well executed, and the plot line of the movie traces the moral decisions that the protagonist makes, ultimately concluding that doing what’s right might not always lead to a solved problem, making the film stand out from it’s contemporaries.

Boyhood: Writer-director Richard Linklater followed and shot the life of a boy and his family for twelve years, culminating in the breathtakingly brilliant portrait that Boyhood is. A film which is  extraordinary because it celebrates the ordinary, Boyhood leaves the viewer with a lot to think about. It’s cinematographic nuances are outstanding and the plot unfolds magically.  One of the most acclaimed films this year, and one with a major chance of taking the trophy home, this film is a must watch for everyone.

The Imitation Game: An enthralling story enfolds as Alan Turin, the legendary cryptanalyst, works with his team to break top secret code for Britain during World War II. A dramatic tale which moves the audience while simulateneously amazing them, this film is very well written and executed. Winning the lead actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, an Oscar Nomination for the Best Actor, this film is a must watch for it’s performances, storyline, and the celebration of an extraordinary mind.

Whiplash: A moving story of the challenges an adolescent faces while pursuing his dream of becoming a drummer, this movie is a visual treat that leaves you with a lot to think about. Terence Fletcher, played by JK Simmons, plays a terrifying teacher at the Conservatory where Miles Teller spends most of his time, mastering his art. Brilliant performances, an intriguing story and a subject not touched upon too often: this movie is a must watch for all this and more.

Birdman: The story of a cinematic stalwart who decides to undertake a Broadway production to prove his creative mettle, this film is a satire on celebrity. Incredible performances by Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton complement director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s compelling narrative. The film brings out the differences between cinema and theatre, while intricately tracing the character’s emotional journey.
