New Delhi: Google, to mark International Women’s Day, on Sunday, honoured the efforts of women by highlighting their achievements in diverse fields.
The doodle features a doctor, painter, lawmaker and a scientist among others. Women can also be seen painting, playing a guitar and teaching students in the logo.
The United Nations theme for the International Women’s Day this year is “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!”
Governments and activists around the world will commemorate the 20th anniversary year of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, an historic roadmap that sets the agenda for realizing women’s rights.
The International Woman’s Day theme for 2015 is ‘Make It Happen’ with a dedicated hashtag for social media.
Last year, Google celebrated International Women’s Day with a video-based doodle featuring over 100 famous female personalities including Pakistani teen and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai and Bollywood legend Asha Bhonsle.
The video featured a single by Belgian artist Marie Daulne playing in the background.
The first recorded celebration for International Women’s Day was on May 3, 1908, in Chicago in the US. It was celebrated on March 8 for the first time in 1914. But the dates continued to fluctuate till the mid-40’s.
In the West, International Women’s Day was first observed as a popular event after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.
