Fire at New Secretariat building in Kolkata

Kolkata: Massive fire broke out in a building in Kolkata on Friday which houses many government departments, including the offices of some ministers.

The high-rise houses departments such as the Panchayat Department and Anti-Corruption Bureau, Transport Department offices, Public Health and Engineering (PHE). It also houses Panchayat Minister, Subrata Mukherjee and Transport Minister, Madan Mitra’s offices.

Thick smoke was seen billowing out of the windows of the building. Twenty fire engines were sent to douse the flames.

The fire began at about 10.20 am on the seventh floor of the New Secretariat building in the city.

People have been evacuated from the building. There have been no reports of any death so far.

The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
