In the final leg of his Europe tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for a collective action against terrorism. Speaking at a summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Modi did not mince his words
The world told us that terrorism was a law and order problem when we spoke about terrorism 25 years ago.
“Collective efforts are required against terrorism, the sensitivity that is there against nuclear proliferation should be similar campaign against terrorism.”
Modi’s Mantra to combat terrorism is to increase costs for countries supporting terrorism.
“Isolate the backers of terrorism. Comprehensive convention on counter terrorism needed by the world and the UN must adopt it†he said.
During his address, the Indian Prime Minister also stressed on a permanent seat for India and Germany in the UN Security Council. Â
“We will take the India-Germany strategic partnership to a new level, the Lion and Eagle will have a good bonding,†Modi said.
In the joint statement, Modi emphasized on the following points:
* With an open mind we have discussed India-Germany ties
* The lion and eagle will make good partners
* It is natural that when we are thinking about make in India we are thinking about cooperation with Germany
* Germany is known for skill development, which is a priority area for us. There is a lot we can learn from Germany
* We have also discussed international issues in our meeting
* I believe both India and Germany should be permanent members in the UNSC and the world will gain a lot by this
* Germany’s strength is manufacturing. India’s workforce that will be trained in this sector can become the world’s workforce
* Terrorism needs to be defined. I urge the UN to pass a pending resolution that will define terrorism
* The way the world is sensitive about nuclear weapons, it should be sensitive about terrorism and nations that harbour terrorists
