Amma is back calls for a meeting

Date:

Chennai: Ruling AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa, who is expected to return as Tamil Nadu chief minister following her acquittal in the disproportionate assets case, has convened a meeting of her party MLAs on May 22.

The party general secretary Jayalalithaa on Friday said the meeting will be held at 7am at the party headquarters in Lloyds Road, Royapettah

“I request all the members of legislature to participate in the meeting without fail,” she said in a brief statement.

The meet is likely to elect Jayalalithaa as the leader of the party, which would pave the way for her to become chief minister for the fifth time.

Decks were cleared for her return as CM after the Karnataka High Court on May 11 acquitted her in the 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.

The court had set aside her conviction by the trial court and the four-year jail sentence awarded to her and three others, which had led to her automatic disqualification as MLA and exit as chief minister in September last year.

Senior party leader O Panneerselvam had assumed charge as stop-gap chief minister after being hand-picked by Jayalalithaa to succeed her.

Meanwhile, Jayalalithaa’s widely expected swearing-in as chief minister has reportedly been delayed over a possible appeal by Karnataka against her acquittal in a corruption case on Monday and a few other reasons.

Senior AIADMK leaders said there were no hurdles within the party for her return as CM. “The governor has greeted Amma on her victory which means he will not hesitate to swear her in. But Amma is not in a hurry as we already have a government led by O Panneerselvam in place,” said a senior leader.
