Of need and greed: Roti kapda and makaan

Date:

Hyderabad: So, then, in the big bad world, anyone can turn up against you and bite you in places you never knew existed. And like I said, no one, just no one can be trusted. You’d be feeling that I’m a rather pessimistic writer, but no, sire, I’m not. I’m still coming to terms with a ‘story’ I’d read in the morning.

A son killed his father. Cold-blooded murder. Claims he did that because he had a tiff with him over business. A tiff. A murder. Is this what relationships are coming to? Perhaps yes.

We, as a race, are born selfish, no doubt about that. But as we grow, we shed that skin and become a little mature, with every little step, accommodating others into our folds. However, ever since the love for money and all things luxurious has taken over, that mask is coming on, with emotions now being replaced by needs and greeds.

Look at any family. Feuds erupt from the need to own, to have. Properties, inheritance, shares, cash — these breed animosity between siblings, parents, cousins. They turn ugly with lawyers minting the moolah and the families hopelessly fight.

But now, we have taken one step backward in this direction. We are ready to kill. Spill our near and dear ones’ blood to become richer by a few notes.

Relationships no longer take centre stage. Wealth does. A son killed his father; a father who gave him birth and raised him to be a good person. A father, who sacrificed his own needs to take care of his desires. A father who was a father; a son who became a demon.

It makes me sad to see how little they gain and how much they lose. Words, bullets and clubs, they use to destroy someone who loved them. All for the jingle of money. Roti, kapda and makaan are pushing man to become animals. And we say we are civilised.
