Good deed of the dead: organ donation

Date:

New Delhi: We all do something noble in our life span for our inner peace, but how good it would be when you can continue the same deed even after you are dead.

A similar case came forward when a 42-year-old man, who was declared brain dead at a private hospital in New Delhi, has become the ninth cadaver donor at AIIMS.

According to hospital authorities, the man’s heart, liver and two kidneys have been transplanted, while his corneas have been preserved.

“The patient was admitted to Rockland Hospital in Qutab institutional area with complaints of severe headache and pain in the right side of the body on June 23rd morning.

“Within two-three hours, the patient was diagnosed to have aneurysmal hemorrhage and put on ventilator. He was intubated and declared brain stem dead by evening,” Rajeev Makhuri, Senior Organ Transplant Coordinator, Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO), AIIMS, said on Monday.

On being explained about the patient’s condition by the neurosurgeon treating him, his family agreed for his organ donation. On June 24, the neurosurgeon called up AIIMS Director and informed about the family’s decision.

Following this, an ORBO team reached Rockland Hospital and the patient was transferred to Trauma Centre of AIIMS.

“After two tests, the patient was declared brain dead following which on June 25 his organs were retrieved.

His heart was transplanted into a 48-year-old male suffering from dialectic cardiomyopathy, while his kidneys went to two different males.

Due to non-availability of a suitable recipient at AIIMS, his liver was offered to Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences and transplanted into a 54-year-old man suffering from acute and chronic liver failure.

“His corneas have been preserved at AIIMS eye bank for future use,” he added.
