Minting the moolah in 100 crores!

Date:

It is rightly said that records are made to be broken, and the same is the case of Indian film industry. Yes, I am talking about none other than our very own Tinsel Town, the world’s largest production centre.

From setting a record with Rs. 100-crore business, and travelling to Rs. 200 crore business, it now films are now breaching the Rs. 300 crore mark.

Over the past few years, Bollywood’s exceptional movies have been measured by their box office collections. Well, sometimes it is more because of the brand name. The star cast of the film also decides the fate of the film. If it’s all about SRK, Salman or Aamir or even Akshay, the movie has to be a hit at BO, even if doesn’t get critically acclaimed, that’s the power of a brand.

On the other hand, some of the actors like Ajay Devgn or Nawazuddin Siddiqui to name a few, get critically acclaimed for their commendable acting skills but couldn’t get themselves in Rs. 100 crore marks. I am not saying that the actors who make Rs. 100 crore are not hard working, but these big budget films spent a lot of money on their first looks, teasers, trailers and other promotional events, which is not the case with the low budget movies.

They more believe their hardwork rather than promotions and that’s why somewhere down the line, they have to struggle more than the top stars.

With movies hitting the mark of Rs. 300-crore, competition at the Bollywood box office is cutthroat. Earlier, it was Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘PK’ that redefined the meaning of blockbuster by minting Rs. 340.8 crores at the BO and then came the Sallu Bhai’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ that become the second film to cross Rs. 300 crore mark and proved the level which Bhai holds in a common man’s life.

NewsMobile brings you a list of movies that proved to be big blockbusters at the BO:

PK:

Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan’s film ‘PK’ is on a record breaking spree. Days after it claimed the title of Bollywood’s all-time highest grosser, it become the first Bollywood film to make Rs 300 crore. Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial film was not just appreciated nationwide but got applauses worldwide.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan:

Earlier, Salman’s biggest film was Kick which made Rs 231.85 crores but Bhaijaan even broke his own first day records as his flick Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s opening day collection was Rs 27.25 crore whereas Kick collected Rs 25 crore on the first day and leaving behind Kick which was released in 2014, BB becomes the second film to cross the Rs. 300-crore mark, which is a very big thing in itself.

Kick:

This is another Sallu Bhai’s film which was not only critically acclaimed but also did a tremendous job at the BO. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala made his directorial debut with Kick which collected a total collection of Rs. 232 crore at the BO. It proved to be a blockbuster and the other reason for his success may be its Eid release as Salman books the dates for his films to be released on Eid only.

Chennai Express:

When Rohit Shetty and SRK collaborated for the very first time, it had to be a hit and there is no doubt about it. Chennai Express also starred Deepika Padukone opposite Shahrukh and proved to be one of the biggest hits of 2013. The film’s total collection at the BO was Rs 227 crore.

3 Idiots:

And this was another beautiful creation of Rajkumar Hirani. The movie not only won everyone’s heart but also did a great job at the BO. This was the first time Hirani and Aamir worked as a team which resulted as a big hit with a total collection of Rs. 202 crore at the BO and the film also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sharman Joshi, R. Madhavan and Boman Irani.

Happy New Year:

Farah Khan’s directorial film Happy New Year was a big hit at the BO, but not much critically acclaimed. King Khan starrer HNY’s total collection was Rs 202 crore and the film was a multi starrer movie with Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah in the lead.

Ye Jawani Hai Deewani:

Well, the main and foremost reason for YJHD’s success was, it was released after Deepika and Ranbir had a break-up and this was their first film after they called off their relationship. The movie not only created a lot of hype but also did a fair business at the BO. Ayan Mukherjee’s directorial film made a total collection of Rs. 189 crore at the BO and more than that brought the duo into more limelight than ever before.

Is the director in you taking notes?
