India’s Highest Legal Aid Clinic Opened in Sikkim

According to reports in a local daily in Sikkim, executive Chairman of Sikkim Legal Services Authority, Justice SP Wangdi inaugurated the country’s highest Village Level Care and Support Legal Aid Clinic at Thegu .

Justice Wangdi also inaugurated a Legal Aid Clinic at Gnathang the same day. Both the villages are situated a few kilometers from the Indo-China border pass of Nathula. While addressing the gathering in the thinly populated villages of Thegu and Gnathang, which are both tourist attraction spots in Sikkim, Justice Wangdi said that the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority is trying its best to provide legal aid to people in remote corners of the state.

He also urged Para Legal Volunteers who underwent training in September to work sincerely. He further called upon the Para Legal Volunteers to help the State Legal Services Authority in spreading awareness among the masses on AIDS and health care, mental health, drug abuse, consumer affairs and social welfare.

Justice Wangdi also highlighted issues like right to education, women’s rights, labour compensation and other related rights of the people. He was accompanied by Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai, High Court of Sikkim who spoke on the importance of child rights, awareness on domestic violence, narcotic drug abuse and victims’ rights.

Justice Rai described Para Legal Volunteers as a bridge between the masses and the judiciary. The function was organized by the Sikkim Legal Service Authority.
