By-polls: BJP enters Manipur Assembly, loses Ratlam seat; TRS storms Warangal

Date:

It was a mixed bag for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday as it won two seats in the Assembly by-polls in Manipur, while losing one seat in a Lok Sabha by-poll in Jhabua-Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh.

In Manipur, Khumukcham Joykishan defeated the Congress party’s Jyotin Waikhom in Thangmeiband by over 1700 votes. Another BJP leader Thongam Biswajit Singh defeated the Congress’s Bijoy Koingjam in Thongju.

The wins help the BJP open its account in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, in what is a Congress ruled state.

In the Jhabua-Ratlam Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh, BJP was trounced by the Congress by over 80,000 votes. With this win, the Congress has taken up its numbers to 45 in the Lok Sabha.

BJP held the Jhabua-Ratlam seat, before the bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting MP Dilip Singh Bhuria. In Warangal, Telangana, state ruling party Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) bagged the Warangal Lok Sabha constituency in the by-polls.

TRS’s Pasunuri Dayakar won by a majority of over 2.30 lakh votes.

In Mizoram, Lal Thanzara, the younger brother of Chief minister Lal Thanhawla won, while the NDA nominee Lalduhawma came third place. The by-poll was necessitated by the resignation of Lal Thanzara as a legislator and health minister on August 18 last due to allegations of ‘conflict of interests’.
