Remembering ‘The Milkman of India’

November 26 marks the birth anniversary of the milkman of India and Google is celebrating Verghese Kurien’s birth anniversary with doodle.

The doodle shows the white revolution with milk can in the hands of the popular social entrepreneur, along with a cow standing nearby.

Amul, the largest Indian brand of milk and dairy products is also celebrating the birth anniversary of India’s milkman and has posted an image with Amul Girl paying tributes to Verghese Kurien.

Kurien, also known as the ‘Father of the White Revolution,’ turned India from milk-deficient country to the world’s largest milk producer, exceeding America in 1998 with about 17 percent of world’s output in 2010-11.

Not only this, with his efforts, daily farming became India’s largest self-sustaining industry.

His biggest creation was Amul brand of daily products.

Verghese Kurien died on September 9, 2012 in Nadiad, Gujarat. He was 90 year-old.

Interesting facts about Verghese Kurien:

• Shyam Benegal’s film ‘Manthan,’ a plot set on India’s milk cooperative movement, was funded by the farmers working for Dr Kurien.
• He experimented with ways to produce milk powder from buffalo milk. This culminated in the establishment of India’s first ever milk powder plant.
• He received many awards, including the Padamshri (1965) and the Padmabhushan (1966).
• Because of his invaluable contribution to the dairy industry, his birthday, the 26th of November, is now celebrated as National Milk Day.
