Differently-abled protest in Tripura demanding equal rights

Hundreds of people with various disabilities held a sit-in-demonstration in Agartala city of Tripura to protest against the Central government for failing to pass an act which gives disabled persons equal rights and opportunities.

They also demanded immediate passage of the amended PWD (The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act during the ongoing winter session of the parliament. The PWD Act enacted under Article 253 of the constitution ensures full participation and equality of disabled and provides for their equality, empowerment, and creation of barrier free environment.

According to Census 2011, there are 26.8 million persons with disabilities in India that constitute 2.21 percentage of the total population. Since 1992, December 03 is being observed as the day for disabled as promoted by the United Nations.
