Not the end of the world

An emotional French fan got cheered up by a young Portuguese supporter after yesterday’s Euro2016 final. In the shocking aftermath of Sunday’s Euro 2016 final  when Portugal’s soccer team upset the fancied hosts, France and took the winning spree, that’s the trophy, TV cameras caught a tender moment of European amiability.

A Frenchman stands weeping in a fan zone after the loss, his hand covering his face. A young boy in a red Portuguese jersey reaches up and consoles him. There’s a pat on the arm, a hug, and the Frenchman walks away more composed.

According to media reports, this was one of the more heart-warming glimpses of a tournament that otherwise largely failed to capture the imagination. Beyond the stirring success of  teams such as Iceland and Wales, the matches were severe and unmemorable. Hooligan violence also shadowed the initial stages of the competition.

Soccer is Europe’s secular religion. Instead of offering a sense of consolation or even transcendence, this quadrennial event seemed to remind Europe of everything that’s broken. It was a perfect encapsulation of sputtering incoherence, shattered promises, and decline, says the report.
