2 killed as storm lashes city, coastal Bengal

Kolkata, Aug 17 (PTI) Two persons were killed and manyinjured in the storm and rain that lashed the city and coastalareas of the state today. Two persons were killed in the storm, one at Jadavpur insouth Kolkata and another at Beliaghata area of the city,Kolkat Police officials said. At least six other persons were injured in differentincidents following the localised storm, with condition oftwo of them critical, the officials said. As a result a major part of the city witnessed amassive traffic snarl along with water logging in some placesin the evening causing inconvenience to home-bound commutersin the evening hours. City Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said the corporationdeployed 22 teams to clear the uprooted trees from the roads. As overhead wires snapped, train services in Sealdahsection were disrupted for hours. The MeT department forecast heavy rain in mostdistricts of south Bengal, including the metropolis, tilltomorrow as result of a deep depression near the coastaltown of Digha in the southern tip of West Bengal. Most of the districts in south Bengal experiencedmoderate to heavy rains and gusty wind having speed upto 70km/hr owing to the deep depression, Regional MeT Director G CDebnath said. PTI AKB SUSRG
