Body of Srinagar man allegedly killed by police exhumed

Srinagar, Aug 18 (PTI) The body of a man, allegedly killedby police in Batamaloo area of the city on July 10, wasexhumed today in the presence of a District and Sessions judgefollowing a Supreme Court order to this effect. "The body of Shabir Ahmad Mir was exhumed from a graveyardin the area for conducting a postmortem to ascertain the causeof his death. It has been taken to a hospital here forautopsy," a police official said. The Supreme Court had on August 12 ordered that exhumationand autopsy of the body of the 26-year-old man be carried outunder the supervision of the District and Sessions Judge. Earlier, the deceased’s father, Abdul Rehman Mir, hadfiled an application before the CJM, Srinagar, alleging hisson was killed by police at his home on July 10. He had soughtregistration of a case against the personnel, including Dy SPYasir Qadri. Police, however, claimed that he died during protests inthe Valley. The CJM, on two occasions, directed the SSP, Srinagar, toregister an FIR against the police personnel. The state then filed a petition before the Jammu andKashmir High Court under Section 561-A CrPC seeking quashingof the CJM order. However, it upheld the order and directed toproceed in the case as per law. Later, in a notice to the SSP, Srinagar, the CJM courtasked why contempt proceedings should not initiated againsthim and directed the IGP, Kashmir, to register an FIR againstthe accused police personnel. When the IGP also did not comply with the orders, the CJMinitiated contempt proceeding against him and the SSP. Subsequently, the state filed a Special Leave petition inthe Supreme Court. The apex court had on August 9 stayed thecontempt proceedings against the two officers. PTI MIJ GVS RTGVS
