Jengraimukh, Aug 20 (PTI) ‘Sahitya Akademi’ Awardwinning Assamese poet Ajit Barua’s 90th birth anniversary wascelebrated at Jengaraimukh in Majuli river island in the midstof Brahmaputra with lines of his poems recited and discussed. Noted literary critic Dr Debabhuson Borah speaking onthe occasion yesterday delved into Barua’s unique style ofpoems and described him as one of the major modern poeticvoices in Assamese literature. Though the poet liked to call himself the ‘poet ofBrahmaputra’, Borah said on the contrary Ajit Barua has beenpopularly known among people as ‘Jengrair Kobi’ for hisremarkable poem ‘Jengrai 1963’. Educationist Prof Sengaram Morang in his inauguralspeech spoke about certain unknown aspects regarding thecreation of the ‘Jengrai 1963’ poem. Jugol Hazarika, President of local literary bodySachipat contextualised the occasion at Jengaraimukh in aserene open ambience just a few metres away from Suwansiri andKherkotia rivers as they were the source of inspirations onwhich the poet wrote his immortal Jengrai verses. Basanta Hazarika of Sansipat reciting ‘Jengrai 1963’described Ajit Barua as a great icon, poet, lyricist,novelist, critic and translator of Assamese literature. Recitations of Barua’s poems, renderings of hissongs, besides discussions on his literary creations markedthe occasion organised by ‘Ajit Barua Anuragi Xamaj’ incollaboration with ‘Sansipat’ with participation of notedliterateurs Rajanikanta Bordoloi, Rajib Patir, Padma Pegu,Basanta Pegu, Bisweswar Pegu, Ananta Nath, Dimbeswar Bhuyanand Amiyo Chirang, among others.
