HC directs govt to instruct schools to notify admission norms

Date:

Madurai, Aug 22 (PTI) The Madras High Court has ruledthat a student who has completed tenth standard in a CBSEschool cannot claim automatic admission to 11th class, if theschool switches affiliation to state board. It also directed the state government to instruct allschools to notify admission norms in advance. A division bench, comprising Justice Nooty RamamohanaRao and Justice SS Sundar, gave the direction while allowingan appeal by a private school in Tuticorin district, against asingle judge order to admit a student to the appellant school. The bench said, if the school offered state boardeducation for 11th class and the student who pursued hisor her education under CBSE, till tenth, was ready to continuetheir education under state board, then his continuation canbe considered. "It is for the student to exercise the option to eithercontinue in state board or CBSE. Yet, the student should applyafresh for admission if he wants to continue," the bench said. The school contended that 93 students had passed intenth standard under CBSE system in 2015-16. Since the schooloffered only two groups with biology and mathematics asmajors, all of them could not be accommodated as per the stategovernment norms. The court concurred with the argument of the student’scounsel that the schools should have published the governmentnorms in advance for admission to 11th class so that pupilswere not left disappointed. The judges then directed the state government toinstruct all the schools to notify the norms for admission to11th class, in advance. PTI SSN ROHBN
