3-year-old dies in house collapse, Ganga flows above EDM

Malda (WB), Aug 26 (PTI) A three-year-old boy today diedafter a ‘kutcha’ house collapsed due to overnight rain as thetoll due to the calamities rose to two even as the floodsituation in parts of the district remained grim with theGanga still flowing above extreme danger mark. The child, along with four other family members, weretrapped after their ‘kutcha’ house collapsed at Jodhpatavillage due to incessant rains. All the five were taken out from debris by neighboursthis morning and sent to hospital where the boy was declareddead, a senior district official said. Yesterday a two-year-old was swept away in Kaliachak asvast areas got submerged by water from Ganga which was flowingat extreme danger level in the area for past few days, theofficial said putting the death toll in the current wave offlood in the district to two. An estimated 35,000 people in 40 villages under 10 grampanchayat areas were cut off as the swollen Ganga submergedunprotected area from the Farakka barrage side, the officialsaid adding Ratua, Kaliachak, Manikchak, Bardeunapur wereamong the worst-hit bearing the brunt of the river in spate.
