Woman raped, attacked with acid in Kanpur

Kanpur, Aug 27 (PTI) A 40-year-old woman from Allahabadwas allegedly raped by three men who also poured acid on herface before dumping her on the tracks close to Kanpur RailwayStation, police said today. The victim was found with severe damage to one of hereyes, burns on her face and neck yesterday afternoon, policesaid, adding that the trio attacked her with acid in anapparent attempt to conceal her identity. "The victim has been hospitalised. She cannot speak dueto facial acid burns and one of her eyes has been severelydamaged," Kanpur SSP Shalabh Mathur said. "The victim, through sign language, told us that she wasraped by at least three men in the wee hours of Friday. Later,the men threw acid on her face and dumped her near the track,"the SSP said. Further interrogations will be carried out when thevictim is able to speak. The medical report is still awaited,he said. Some locals claimed the victim was a beggar and had cometo Kanpur two days ago. Others said she came in search of workfour days ago from Allahabad and was staying at a slum nearthe railway station, he added. A case has been lodged at the Collectorgunj policestation. The SSP today suspended two constables, Mahendra Yadavand Sushil Kumar, for not providing immediate medical care tothe victim. There have been no arrests yet. PTI ZIR ANB BSA DVBSA
