Six sentenced to 20 years RI for raping woman

Jajpur (Odisha), Sept 9 (PTI) Six persons were sentencedto 20 years rigorous imprisonment by a court here today forraping a married woman in Mangalpur area in Odisha’s Jajpurdistrict two-and-a-half years ago. Jajpur Additional District and Sessions Court Judge (ADJ)Bikram Kumar Pradhan while awarding the jail terms, alsoslapped a penalty of Rs 5000 each on the six for the crimecommitted in February 2014 and ordered the sum be madeavailable to the victim. Failure to pay the penalty would attract at least sixadditional months in prison, the court ruled after convictingthem under section 376(D) (gangrape) and 34 (common intention)of IPC. 15 people, including the investigating officer, witnessesand the doctor, were examined in course of the trial. According to the prosecution, the victim, a 37-year-oldmarried woman and mother of four was returning home aloneafter getting down from a bus at Mangalpur stop on February17, 2014 evening. Finding her alone, the six people forcibly took her alonely place and raped her there in turns. The victim lost hersenses following the gangrape. She returned home after regaining her senses and reportedthe matter to her husband who is a truck helper. Later, acomplaint was filed with the Sukinda police in this connectionfollowing which all the six were arrested. PTI CORR SKN MDSC
