Curfew-like restrictions in some areas of Srinagar

Srinagar, Sep 11 (PTI) Curfew-like restrictions were inforce in three police station areas of Srinagar today, whilecurbs on assembly of people continued throughout Kashmir asnormal life remained affected for the 65th straight day in theunrest-hit Valley. Curfew-like restrictions were in place in Nowhatta, M RGunj and Khanyar police station areas of the city, a policeofficial said. He said there was no curfew anywhere in the Valley. However, the official said restrictions on the assemblyof people continued to remain in force throughout the Valleyto maintain law and order. Meanwhile, normal life remained crippled due torestrictions and the shutdown call by separatist groupsagainst the killing of civilians in security forces’ actionover the past two months. While shops, business establishments and petrol pumpscontinued to remain shut during the day, they open in theevening on some days of the week in view of the 12-hourrelaxation in the strike from 6 PM announced by theseparatists. The separatists have extended the shutdown programme tillSeptember 16. Schools, colleges and other educational institutions inthe Valley continued to remain closed. Some of the areas in the outskirts and civil lines ofSrinagar witnessed increased movement of private vehicles andauto-rickshaws this morning, while some shops sellingessentials were also open in view of the upcoming Eidfestival. The deadly violence, in the wake of Hizbul Mujahideencommander Burhan Wani’s killing in an encounter with securityforces in south Kashmir on July 8, has left 75 people,including two cops, dead and several thousands injured.
