Haryana to re-construct JLN canal

Chandigarh, Sep 12 (PTI) To achieve the goal of ‘Har KhetKo Pani’ (water to every field), the Haryana government todayapproved a Rs 143 crore project for re-construction of JawaharLal Nehru (JLN) Canal system. Tenders have been floated for the work which would becompleted in a phased manner by March 2018, an officialspokesman said. Also, a Rs 300 crore project for rehabilitation of 565water courses has recently got approval from NABARD. Theproject would be completed in two years and would help inreducing the gap between irrigation potential created andpotential in use, he said. Giving details here today, a spokesman of HaryanaIrrigation and Water Resources Department said five disbandedold bridges were being reconstructed at a cost of Rs 30 croreto remove obstacles in Western Jamuna Canal (WJC) main line. Out of these, the construction work of three bridges hasbeen completed and the remaining two bridges would becompleted by December, he said. He said to ensure water upto tail end, a sum of Rs 135crore has been spent for maintenance and desilting of canalsand water courses, whereas rehabilitation work at a cost of Rs150 crore has been started at Petwar branch, Hisar majorbranch, Prithla branch, Paharpur minor, Khanaury minor,Jakhauli branch, Tohana branch, new Urlana minor, JahangirpurMinor and Loharu Branch. The spokesperson said ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi SinchayeeYojna’ has been started to "permanently resolve the problem ofdrought". The aim of the scheme is to ensure water to every field.Under this yojna, ‘District Irrigation Schemes’ are beingprepared for all districts and accordingly irrigationmanagement would be done, he said. He said major ongoing irrigation projects under thisscheme would be completed on priority basis so that maximumareas could be irrigated. To ensure per drop more irrigation, water savingtechniques like sprinkler irrigation and drip irrigation wouldbe further promoted, he said. The spokesman said in the tenure of present stategovernment, "210 schemes costing Rs 275.32 crore of floodcontrol have been started". Out of these, work on 159 projects has been completed ata cost of Rs 141.21 crore, whereas work on 23 projects is inprogress, he said. He said in 2016-17 as many as 105 new schemes of Rs 124.77crore and 140 ongoing schemes of Rs 256.80 crore have beenapproved for flood control and drainage. Also, approval has been granted to prepare 390 injectionwells at a cost of Rs 6.41 crore for the conservation ofground water using the flood water, he added. PTI VJ AQS RGAQS
