Farakka Patna, Sep 20 (PTI) The Bihar government today made astrong presentation before a committee constituted by UnionWater Resources ministry to show how siltation in Ganga riverdue to Farakka dam led to rise in water level of the river atseveral points resulting in flood. Principal Secretary of Bihar Water Resources DepartmentArun Kumar Singh made a power point presentationbefore Madhav Chittle committee, an official statement saidhere. The committee was formed at the initiative of the Bihargovernment. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during his meeting with PrimeMinister Narendra Modi had drawn his attention towardssiltation triggered by Farakka dam resulting in rise in waterlevel in Ganga and resulting in flood every year. He had urged the PM for a deep study of the situation andformulate a national silt policy. The Bihar government’s presentation in national capitalwas attended by Secretary of Union Water Resources ministryShashi Sekhar and IIT Delhi Professor A K Gosain. In his presentation, Singh showed how due to siltationcaused by Farakka dam resulted in record rise in water levelin Ganga at Patna, Hathidah and Bhagalpur this year causingwidespread destruction. He demanded decommissioning of Farakka dam due to its badimpact. The officer also made a strong case for formulation ofnational silt policy.
