Volkswagen replaces Toyota as the World’s Biggest Automaker

Date:

Toyota, on Monday, reported that it sold 10.175 million vehicles worldwide in the year 2016, falling short of the Volkswagen‘s 10.31 million mark. This will be the first time in history that the German Giant will be crowned the World’s Biggest Automaker, despite losing its credibility over the scandal where they were proven guilty of faking the fuel emission results in their vehicles. It is believed that the booming China sales for VW have led to this shift in the ranks.

However, General Motors will have the last word in this battle as they are yet to reveal their numbers for the year 2016. It is expected that GM will be announcing its sales by next week and if they fall short of the 10.31 million mark set by the Volkswagen, it will be the first such feat in VW’s history.

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. has had the auto crown for the past four years, although it fell behind General Motors in 2011 when production was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

Detroit-based GM was the top-selling automaker for more than seven decades until Toyota surpassed it in 2008.
