Bengali now mandatory in West Bengal schools

West Bengal now makes it compulsory for the schools in the state to teach Bengali as the second or third language in the curriculum. The announcement was mad by Education Minister of the state Partha Chatterjee came on Monday evening at a press conference.

“From now on, it will be compulsory for students to learn Bengali in schools. English medium schools will have to make Bengali an optional subject from Class I so that the students can study it either as a second or third language,” said Partha Chatterjee.

Apart from Bengali, Hindi, and English, there are provisions to adopt, Urdu, Nepali, Gurmukhi and Ol-Chiki among other languages to choose from.

The decision taken by the Mamta Banerjee government comes after the similar decision taken by the CPI (M) government in Kerala.
