PM Modi, Chancellor Merkel strengthen ties at fourth IGC

Date:

At a press conference held on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra issued a joint statement with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Both leaders delivered their addresses in their native languages.

The joint statement was conducted after both leaders participated in the fourth round of the Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) held in Berlin earlier in the day.

The two leaders also attended a press conference where they signed agreements covering the fields of cybercrime, railway and aviation safety, and sustainable urban development. The two governments have agreed to a $1.1 billion German development aid to India for the purposes of urban development.

During the joint statement, PM Modi praised Chancellor Merkel’s global vision and emphasized India and Germany’s strong partnership in a variety of fields. PM Modi focused on leveraging German expertise in infrastructure and skill development to support his government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ initiatives.

Prime Minister Modi said that the two governments had conducted a comprehensive review of regional and global issues in the India-Germany Intergovernmental Consultations.

The discussions between PM Modi and Chancellor Merkel were marked by a focus on strengthening economic ties and to promote development policies in India. Additionally, Chancellor Merkel also discussed about shaping the world order with India, a development that comes from Merkel’s statement two days earlier about reducing Germany’s reliance on its traditional allies, aimed at Britain and the US.
