This is how you can identify plastic rice

Claims have been made of the existence of Plastic rice in the Indian market and it has started surfacing around the internet. Various rice samples have already been collected from various restaurants of Hyderabad after people complained about the suspicion of plastic rice being served there.

This plastic rice originated from a scam in China in 2010, where rice was made with the mixture of potatoes, sweet potatoes and plastic to earn larger profits. A Huge consignment of plastic rice was also seized in Nigeria following the scam.

Apart from plastic rice, there were also reports of plastic eggs earlier this year in India. Plastic rice could be very harmful to consume and it can affect your hormones and reproductive system. Although no confirmation have been made yet about plastic rice in India, these few methods could surely help you to identify if still in doubt.

Boiling test

If you boil the rice and observe a thick layer of foam at the top of the container, it is most likely to be plastic rice.

Fire test

Simply burn the rice with a lighter and if the rice smells odd like plastic, you know what it is.

Water test

Put a spoon of rice in a glass of water and stir, if the rice still floats it’s not the genuine one as rice never floats on water.

Hot oil test

Heat oil in a pan and put the rice, the plastic rice will melt and form a sticky plastic layer in the bottom of the pan.
