Landslide buries village in SW China, more than 100 people feared dead

Date:

More than 100 people are feared to be buried after a landslide buried a mountain village in the southwestern Sichuan province in China in the early hours of Saturday. Rescue efforts are currently ongoing and have so far rescued three people.

According to reports from Chinese state media, 46 homes of Xinmo village had been swept by the landslide. Reports also show 400 people involved in the search and rescue operations with more emergency services on the way to provide assistance. It is believed that heavy rains in the region caused the landslide.

The mountainous region is prone to earthquakes and also possesses an extensive network of dams. In 2008, a 8.0 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan resulted in the deaths of 70,000 people.
