Centre sends top official to Mumbai to assess impact of global cyber attack

Date:

The global cyber attack that has struck Europe and European companies has now made its way to India as well. One of the three terminals at India’s largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, in Mumbai has been affected by the global cyber attack, disrupting operations at the port.

Gulshan Rai, India’s chief of cyber security, has been sent to Mumbai by the Central government to assess the damage done by the cyber attack and whether government systems have been affected by the attack. Rai has been accompanied by another leading cyber crime investigator Brijesh Singh, IG, Cyber Crime of Maharashtra Police

Rai told NewsMobile that “preliminary information suggests that no government system has been impacted but since the central system of Maersk which handles one terminal at Nhava Sheva has been affected so they have resorted to a shut down. However I am visiting personally to inspect and assess the impact.”

The affected terminal is operated by Danish shipping company Maersk, which has been affected by the cyber attack globally. Operations at the port have slowed down significantly as the port has to clear containers manually. The slowdown is causing a chain reaction as containers are piling up due to the delay in loading and unloading at Gateway Terminals India.
