‘Don’t drag Ambedkar into politics’, NaMo’s message on Dalit protests

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday finally decided to break his silence on politics of violence. Addressing a gathering, PM Modi said that all politics in the name of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar must stop. He also appealed for peace and calm.

“No other government before BJP’s had given so much respect to Babasaheb Ambedkar. Which is why, istead of dragging him to politics, we should follow the footsteps sown by him,” said PM Modi.

“We are walking on the path shown by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. At the core of Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals is harmony and togetherness. Working for the poorest of the poor is our mission,” he further added.

Mindless violence erupted after Supreme Court order allegedly ‘diluting’ the SC/ST Protection Act was hijacked by violent and politically-motivated elements as weapons replaced slogans, stones were hurled, fires were lit and chaos was unleashed.

In the hours of “protest”, shocking footage had emerged of what was nothing short of organised rioting across the country. In Bihar, Punjab, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and other states, “protesting” mobs went on the rampage with no regard for safety or public property

Meanwhile, after the Centre moved Supreme Court with a review petition on its earlier observation, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that there would be no stay on its March 20 order in the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.  Hearing the government’s review petition in the case, the apex court gave parties in the case time to file written submissions but declined to stay its order.
