The Congress has named old warhorse Kamal Nath as the new president of the state unit and balanced it by handing over the reins of the assembly election campaign to the Jyotiraditya Scindia. Congress is expected to announce the heads for a few more states, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The current president Arun Yadav said he would not contest local or national elections but would continue to work for the organisation. Nath is a nine-time Lok Sabha MP, where the party has been out of power for 15 years, from Chhindwara and the front-runner for the post of the chief minister after this announcement .
The Congress in Madhya Pradesh has been dominated for decades by Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath. The third prominent figure Jyotiraditya Scindia, the son of the late Madhavrao Scindia, was the chairman of the campaign committee during the 2013 Assembly elections as well.
The party also appointed four working presidents — Bala Bachchan, Ramnivas Rawat, Jitu Patwari and Surender Choudhary — considering factional and caste balance.
