Out of the hundreds of photos from the Group of Seven (G-7) summit in Canada, this picture of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood as soon as it surfaced on social media.
In the picture that her team shared on her Instagram account, Merkel, is seen staring down at the US President, Donald Trump while standing behind a table with both hands pressed firmly on its surface atop some documents.
Merkel and Trump are also surrounded by slew of other leaders, including the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe and the US National Security Adviser, John Bolton.
The picture of the German Chancellor has invited hilarious captions and memes across social media with many calling it an ‘iconic photo’ of the summit.

With as neutral an expression as possible, she stares directly at Trump, who is sitting on the other side of the table.
Merkel captioned the picture: “Day two of the G-7 summit in Canada: spontaneous meeting between two working sessions.”
Though it is not known that what was really going on at that moment, the image garnered plenty of commentary from experts on the Internet.
While many said that the picture sums up Trump’s time at G-7, several others called it ‘power dynamics’.

To many social media users the picture was something more than “a thousand words” while several others made a deeper interpretation.
“It looks as if Madam Merkel is teaching The Donald a lesson! Preach Chacellor, preach!”, “As US we apologise for his childish behavior”, “Show him who’s the boss Angela,” a social media user said.
American journalist Dan Rather tweeted,
It’s like a Renaissance master who captures a complex human narrative in one well-framed canvas. This one photo seems to sum up so much of our times. https://t.co/I9WppPrnWZ

On the first day of the summit, which is being held in Canada’s La Malbaie, Trump pitched the idea of discarding all tariffs and trade barriers between the US and its G-7 allies.
Trump will not attend the second day of the two-day summit because he will be preparing for the ‘historic’ summit with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un to be held in Singapore on 12 June.
