Home Minister Rajnath Singh to visit J-K tomorrow

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Jammu and Kashmir on July 4 and 5. He will also take a tour of the Amarnath shrine on July 5 and will also chair a security review meeting in Srinagar city, as the state has witnessed a huge spurt in terror activity.

The first batch of Amarnath yatra which was flagged off on June 27 but was halted the next day due to heavy rainfall at the Baltal base camp. The yatra was resumed a few hours after the water cleared out and weather condition improved. The annual Amarnath pilgrimage will continue till August 26.

Singh may be accompanied by national security adviser Ajit Doval.  A key agenda for Singh’s visit, the first after his party BJP broke the alliance with PDP, is likely to be conducting a detailed security review to take stock of the situation. NSA Doval is expected to be part of the review meeting, apart from governor N N Vohra and top brass of the Army, J&K government and police, Central para-military forces and intelligence agencies.

Nearly two lakh pilgrims from across the country have reportedly registered themselves for the Yatra. Security measures have been taken keeping in mind the ceasefire violations from across the border and various other terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

On July 10 last year, at least nine Amarnath pilgrims were killed and 19 others got injured in an attack on the bus in Anantnag district.
