Protests, farmer demands to greet PM Modi in Midnapur today

Date:

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address farmers in Midnapur, West Bengal, on Monday. The focus is likely to be on the recent decision to increase the MSP of kharif crops, similar to his farmer address in Punjab.

The Left and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are expected to stage a protest at the venue. Ahead of the visit the BJP and the  traded barbs and indulged in a poster war in the town on Sunday. A day before Modi addresses a farmers’ rally, the TMC’s district leadership has wrapped the entire Midanpore town especially the area around the venue of Modi’s meeting with party flags, festoons and huge cutouts of Bengal chief minister and party president Mamata Banerjee, newspaper reports said.

The BJP leadership accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of threatening private bus operators in many districts not to provide vehicles to ferry BJP activists to the Monday rally, some news reports suggests. The Trinamool Congress denied the charge.

Meanwhile farmers from West Bengal have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide them with proper facilities and water, as a part of the ‘Krishak Kalyan Rally’. The farmers from Midnapur and surroundings said they are unaware of various government facilities, including credit card, farmer’s loan and insurance.

“We want water, we are farming paddy, but due to water shortage farming is in troubled stage. Vegetable farming has been affected as I don’t have enough money for farming. We want money and loan, we also want Kisan credit card. We are not that much educated that we will be able to know from where we get facilities. We didn’t get any fund for destroyed crops during rainy season,” a Lakhikanta Kalandi, a farmer told ANI newswire.

“We are facing trouble in farming. If we invest in farming we can’t spend money for children’s education. We want some loan. Our vegetable crops have been destroyed by elephants, but we didn’t get any compensation for that,” another farmer said.
