Pak voters give thumbs down to 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed & Co

Date:

The mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Hafiz Saeed, has lost elections from his parliamentary constituency. The head of banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the political wing of the Lashkar-e-Taiba chief and a UN designated terrorist Saeed has been rejected by Pakistani voters. Saeed’s son, who contested from NA-91 seat from Sargodha (about 200 km from Lahore) has also lost.

His political party Milli Muslim League was denied registration in 2017. Its 265 candidates then ran the election through the lesser known Allah-o-Akbar Tehreek, (AAT), and have now either lost their seats or are trailing.

Earlier, in an unusual press conference at 4am local time, Chief Election Commissioner Muhammad Raza Khan acknowledged that the delay in announcement of election results has “caused some annoyance”.

The results were expected by this morning, but the CEC only announced what he called was the “first non-official, preliminary result”. The CEC stressed the delay was on account of a new system — Results Transmission System — introduced by it.
