Global diplomats express condolences on the demise of former PM Vajpayee

Date:

Top UN Ambassadors and the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday signed the condolence book at the Indian mission to the UN in New York to record their condolences on the death of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Guterres also fondly recalled his association with Vajpayee. Vajpayee, 93, breathed his last on August 16 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, after a period of prolonged illness. He was cremated with full state honours at Smriti Sthal on the banks of river Yamuna the next day by his foster daughter Namita Bhattacharya. The seven day state mourning for Vajpayee ended on Thursday.

Many political leaders in India and abroad grieved the loss and paid tributes to the late leader.

On Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah handed urns with Vajpayee’s ashes to party presidents across the country.

The party will be organising ‘asthi kalash yatras’ in different districts to immerse the ashes in 100 rivers across the country.

The processions will begin from state capitals and will continue through all blocks. While addressing the event here Minister of State (MoS) Railways Manoj Sinha asserted, “Vajpayee played a pivotal role in the development of this country. His appeal to the people of Gazipur during the 1999 election, helped me to win.”
