CPM leader Yechury compares Sabarimala protest to Babri demolition

Date:

Talking about the Sabarimala standoff, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said these protests are similar to those witnessed during the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992.

“All the TV crews who went there which had women were roughed up, the pattern is very similar to the time of the Babri Masjid demolition. You have the heads of the volunteers wearing saffron bands, the same dress you found there then,” he said.

“Similar thing is being done here (Sabarimala) so it is an organised thing that the RSS is doing. RSS has lost the battle of not letting the gates of Sabarimala open, they even lost the battle that the temple shouldn’t open on time,” he added.

Two women protected by more than 100 policemen in riot gear, turned back just 500 meters short of entering the shrine after the chief priest of the shrine said that he will lock the temple and walk out if any woman enters the temple.

On Thursday, the New Delhi-based woman journalist was also stopped midway by devotees opposing the entry of women of menstrual age into the hill shrine.

In the Supreme Court verdict, pronounced on September 28, the SC removed the ban on entry of women between the age of 10-50 years. This is the first time Sabarimala Temple in Kerala has been opened after the verdict was announced.
