This picture of an elephant and a falling bus is not from India

Date:

The photograph of an elephant head-to-head with a bus is being shared on social media. The text accompanying the picture claims that the picture was shot in Uttarakhand. It goes onto claim that the elephant is preventing the bus from falling off into a ravine. ” उत्तराखंड में खाई में गिर रही बस को रोक कर इस हाथी ने लोगो की जान बचाई जय गणेशा,” the caption claims.

However, the same image had surfaced in 2017, making similar claims but the place in those posts claimed that the picture was taken in Jharkhand.

Fact Check

We researched and found that the said image was clicked Nov 16, 2007. The picture was taken during the Bangladesh Cyclone and belongs to Associated Press. The description of the image reads, ‘ An elephant pushes a stranded bus as it is employed to clear a road in Barishal, 120 kilometers, (75 miles) south of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, Friday, Nov. 16, 2007. A cyclone slammed into Bangladesh’s coast with 240 kph (150 mph) winds, killing at least 242 people, leveling homes and forcing the evacuation of 650,000 villagers before heading inland and losing power Friday, officials said. The messages claiming the image are of Uttarakhand or Jharkhand are fake on two accounts – location and time.
