SC refuses Karti Chidambaram’s plea for urgent hearing to travel

Date:

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to give an urgent hearing on Karti Chidambaram’s request to travel aboard from November 3, saying ‘going abroad is not a matter that needs to be taken up tomorrow.’

Karti, the son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, was earlier allowed to go abroad on certain conditions including the fact he would not open or close any bank account abroad.

He is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in several cases, including the INX Media case where he allegedly gave FIPB clearances and received foreign funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in return, when his father was the finance minister

As per the rules and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy of the government, Chidambaram was only empowered to give approval to proposals involving foreign investment up to Rs 600 crore only. However, he approved the foreign investment proposal of Global Communication and Services Holdings Ltd worth Rs 3560 crore approximately.

The ED had said the liberty granted to him by the apex court is ‘blatantly and brazenly hampering, subverting, jeopardising and protracting’ the investigation pending against him in the Aircel Maxis Case.

In a separate case on Thursday a Delhi court extended interim protection from arrest granted to Karti and his father in connection with the Aircel-Maxis case.

The court had extended their interim protection on October 8 while hearing anticipatory bail pleas of the father-son duo seeking protection from arrest by the CBI and ED in the case. Earlier, the ED had filed a petition in the top court seeking cancellation of interim relief granted to the two.
