7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes near Antarctica

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake this morning struck near the South Sandwich Islands, north of Antarctica in the southern Pacific Ocean, according to the US Geological survey.

According to reports, the earthquake struck at a depth of 164.7 kilometres. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake is considered to be a massive one that can create havoc, damage buildings and cause widespread damage in the populated regions.

Two days back, a earthquake struck in Alaska of magnitude 4.8 and destroyed the roads and bridges.

In an advisory by the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, there was no threat of tsunami reported so far.
