Delhi, since its inception, has been in the news for all different reasons including political, lifestyle, culture, and heritage. Besides being one of the best places for tourism, it is considered to be a well-planned city. For Delhiites, today is a day to celebrate as the capital city is celebrating its 107th anniversary.

  • Upon being the capital of India, Delhi’s most popular Walled City or Chandni Chowk had fourteen entry points, however, if you did not know, now there are only five existing gates in the area namely Kashmiri Gate, Lahori Gate, Ajmeri Gate, Delhi Gate, and Turkman Gate.
  • Delhi received the crown of the capital of India in the year 1911 by George V. the British Emperor of that time, however, it started actually functioning as the capital in 1931.
  • This might sound strange but Delhi is the largest city in India in terms of its area of 1484 square kilometres.

  • According to legends, Delhi is named after Dhillu, a king who ruled the city in 50 BC.
  • New Delhi is considered to be an eco-friendly city owing to the extensive use of CNG as an attempt to reduce air pollution, however, looking at the current scenario, this fact may leave you thinking.
  • The Jama Masjid is the largest mosque of India built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was built during 1644-1656.
  • The Azadpur Market in the city is considered to be the biggest vegetable and fruit market in Asia.
  • The largest spice market of Asia is also in Delhi in Khari Baoli, so if you thought of planning a trip to the South for spices, you may consider visiting this area first.
