Cyclone ‘Phethai’: 5602 farmers affected, 37 houses damaged, says Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday, said that the cyclonic storm ‘Phethai’ has affected a total of 5602 farmers in 17 Mandals whereas 37 houses have been damaged so far.

“17 Mandals are affected in East Godavari district, in which 5602 farmers are affected, 37 houses are damaged, 28 partially damaged, and 2179 hectares of paddy fields and 30 hectares of horticulture have been damaged,” he was quoted saying by news agency ANI.

Naidu said that the rehabilitation camps have been set up and the relief work is being carried out ” 32,000 people have been provided food. Mobile connectivity has been restored. East Godavari and Krishna administration brought the situation under control within hours,” he added.

The TDP chief had, on Monday, told state officials to assess damage and provide relief work in the fastest possible way. Earlier on Tuesday, he also conducted an aerial survey of the areas affected.

Cyclone Phethai hit Katrenikona town of Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district on December 17. Schools and educational institutions in the coastal districts have been shut and trains and flights to and from Visakhapatnam were cancelled.

The IMD, in its bulletin, had informed that the depression over north coastal Andhra Pradesh weakened into well-marked low pressure. Due to this, rainfall can be expected Odisha during the next 12 hours.
