Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty rebounded after an intraday fall of over 1% on Wednesday. The Sensex closed 179.79 points, or 0.51%, up at 35,649.94, and the Nifty 50 ended 66.35 points, or 0.62%, higher at 10,729.85.
The Indian rupee was up against the US dollar after the Brent crude fell to $49.93, the lowest since July 2017.

Bharti Airtel shares rose over 4% and the stock was the top Sensex gainer followed by HDFC and HDFC Bank, which rose 2%.
In global markets, US equity futures edged higher, Asian equities had a volatile Wednesday while European markets were still shut for Christmas.
