Cops gather outside Koregaon Bhima for Mega Dalit event

With Koregaon Bhima being surrounded with cops on Tuesday morning, huge crowds of people started coming to the Jaystambh from all over Maharashtra to pay their respects for the 201st anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon.

From Sunday evening itself, people could be seen flocking to Perne and its surrounding areas as well as camping in the open spaces near the Jaystambh.

On this day, a major violence broke out between the Dalits and the right-wing groups at Koregaon Bhima in Maharashtra and the police are on their toes to avoid any such incident being repeated today.

In and around the war memorial, almost 5,000 police personnel have been deployed along with 1200 home guards, 12 rapid action force companies, and State Reserve Police Force. Drone cameras have also been installed for the police to keep an eye on the crowd at discreet locations.

Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of BR Ambedkar who is the present Dalit icon is also likely to visit the memorial today. The right wing leader Milind Ekbote and members of the Kabir Kala Manch have been banned from visiting the memorial.
